Known as Burrow Mump, this prominent and lonely hill offers commanding views across the Somerset Levels. The ruined church that crowns the hill today was constructed in 1724, but there is evidence that it replaced a much earlier church at this site. Many scholars associate this place with the Dark Age Isle of Athelney; a fortress that was once surrounded by marshland and a morass of thickly grown alders. It was from here that King Alfred consolidated the remains of his battle weary forces, before defeating the Vikings at the epic Battle of Ethandun: one of the most famous battles ever fought on English soil. To this day, King Alfred remains the only monarch to have had the title ‘Great’ bestowed on them.
