Situated close to the River Windrush, this once magnificent fortified house dates from 1431-1432 and was built by Sir John, the 7th Lord Lovell, a knight of great bravery and fame. It is through fate of Francis, the 9th and last Lord Lovell, that gives rise to the mystery and legend that is now associated with Minster Lovell Hall. After an unsuccessful revolt against the king, Lovell disappeared. Some say that he hid in an underground vault at the hall, sealed by a faithful servant who died before he could tell anyone where Francis was hidden. In 1708, workmen stumbled across an underground chamber. Inside, sitting upright at a table was a skeleton, said to be Francis, the Ninth and last Lord Lovell.
